WHETHER YOU LOVE your job or hate it, summer is the best time all year to make career lemonade. The long, lazy days of summer are perfect for digging deep to uncover what is really important to you as you start to make plans and lay a foundation for the changes you seek in the fall. Get started right now by taking action on one or more of the following.
1. Revisit your goals.
When was the last time you thought about what you really, really want? Take a few minutes to look at what you set out to do this year and how many of those objectives you can cross off your list. Ask yourself if the goals you set still match what you really want and adjust them accordingly. If you haven’t achieved as much as you wanted so far this year, that’s okay. Just spending some time focusing on your goals will produce amazing results.
2. Refresh your resume.
You’ve been telling yourself for months that you really should update your resume. Why not do it now?
3. Research the job market.
Is your dream job out there somewhere? You won’t know until you take some time to find out.
4. Renew your relationships.
It’s easy to get so caught up in the day-to-day that you forget to keep in touch with people. Job seekers will often say that what they regret most when they re-enter the job market is not keeping up with their network of business and personal acquaintances, making it awkward and obviously self-serving when they reach out for job leads and career advice. Take time this summer to get back in touch before you need to.
5. Reposition your position.
If you’re not happy with the way your job is positioned within your organization, decide how you want it to be and start making plans for changing how your boss and co-workers see you. 6. Replenish yourself.
Get yourself into tip-top shape by taking time to eat right, exercise and get to sleep on time. It’s amazing how good you will feel if you put your physical well being at the top to your to-do list.

Your hidden talents and desires are screaming for more attention. “Summer School” might be just the thing to prepare you for your next big (or small) career step.
The library is packed with books that can take you anywhere you want to go. Spend some time there aimlessly wandering the stacks until something catches your attention. This works just as well at the bookstore—it just costs a little more.
9. Restore your confidence.
Contrary to popular belief, confidence is not a prerequisite for change. And while confidence is often an early casualty in a bad job situation, it is also the easiest thing to recapture. That’s because confidence is a reward for doing. Get busy building your confidence by trying something you have always been afraid to do.
10. Resist the status quo.
